Laundry Detergent Load Counts: Compare the Dose, Not Just the Box

A detergent package’s advertised load count depends on the amount used per load. It is useful purchasing information, but it is not a guarantee that every household or facility will get that many washes.
Read the package basis
The linked Tide Ultra Original Powder listing is one box. The photographed package is labeled 254 oz and 180 loads, and the listing identifies compatibility with high-efficiency washers. Follow the current package directions and the care instructions for the items being washed.
Keep powder weight separate from liquid volume. Ounces by weight and fluid ounces describe different quantities. A comparison based on the large number on the front of two packages can be misleading if the products use different measurement units or dosing assumptions.
Compare like with like
When evaluating two detergents, record product form, package quantity, washer compatibility, and the label’s dosing directions. Do not reduce the dose simply to reach the advertised number of loads, or increase it based only on habit.
A simple illustration shows the arithmetic: if two hypothetical packages both meet your needs and both state 100 comparable loads, dividing each current price by 100 gives a labeled cost per load. That comparison becomes less informative when the load definitions or required doses differ.
Keep a practical usage record
Record when a package enters use and approximately how many loads are completed before it is finished. Note changes in routine rather than interpreting every difference as a product defect. This gives the next purchase a basis in your actual use.
Keep the detergent in its labeled packaging and follow its storage and safety instructions. Do not move it into food containers or treat an online buying guide as a replacement for the label.
Recheck the current package before reordering. Product size, formula, and labeling can change even when a brand name stays familiar. An exact product description is a better reorder reference than “the big box.”
